Why the Solstice Swim is a Must-Do Winter Event on the Sunshine Coast

The Solstice Swim Alexandra Headland has become a standout feature on the Sunshine Coast’s winter calendar.

Each year it draws swimmers from around Queensland and interstate, with numbers expected to reach up to 500 participants in 2025.

The event caters to all levels of experience and encourages community participation.

It’s not about who finishes first — it’s about showing up, giving it a go, and enjoying the experience.

Importantly, the swim also raises funds for community programs, youth initiatives, surf safety, and local services through the Rotary Club of Alexandra Headland.

Solstice Swim Distances – 500m, 1km, 3km & 5km Ocean Swim Options

There are four distances to choose from, making the event accessible to newcomers and experienced ocean swimmers alike:

500m Junior Dash
Ideal for confident young swimmers aged 10+, or first-timers new to ocean events. Parents or guardians are welcome to swim alongside.

1km Swim
A comfortable swim for those with a moderate fitness level.

3km Swim
A more demanding course for swimmers with previous ocean swimming experience.

5km Swim
The longest course, suited to strong swimmers who have trained for open water distances.

All courses start and finish in front of the Alexandra Headland Surf Lifesaving Club, marked by large inflatable buoys.

Swim caps are colour-coded by distance, and participants must pass under the inflatable arch at the finish to record their time.

Safety is a priority, with lifesaving volunteers and IRBs (Inflatable Rescue Boats) monitoring all swim legs.

Swimmers are expected to choose distances that suit their fitness and comfort level.
